y name is Nathan Grey. While I’m the founder of Citadel Tactical CQC, that title is irrelevant. I’m just another person sharing his ideologies and experiences with anyone interested in what I have to say.
I won’t attempt to impress you or validate myself with any affiliations, instructor name drops, or meaningless ranks I’ve held throughout my life. I certainly won’t boast about the styles of martial arts, fighting, and combat I’ve studied, as none of it matters.
The only thing significant in my mind, is what we do with the information we possess. Do we boast about it hoping to elevate our social status? Do we live in denial refusing to accept some inconvenient and harsh realities? Or do we share our knowledge and experience with others in hopes they soar and excel beyond our own capabilities or understandings in what we have to share?

Nathan Grey

‘ve been a fighter and trainer throughout my entire life. As a fighter, despite what some may say, I feel I was nothing special. It wasn’t for a lack of courage or determination. My drive was never for a title. The fighters I’ve respected and feared most in life, weren’t the ones in the spotlight. It’s those who sit in the shadows, quietly observing, who speak with a powerful calmness that resinates “this is a dangerous individual”.
I did most of my fighting in my 20’s while living in New Orleans additionally working as a bouncer and stunt actor, and managing a fighters gym. I continued fighting through my 30’s with those I trained, but now in my late forties, that lifestyle has taken a toll on my body. The only fight I’m interested in the fight for survival. Reality based tactical combat (close quarters combat) is how I best describe my fighting style. It gives me the freedom to do as I need based upon the environment and threat I’m faced with, with no rules of engagement.
My battles with Asthma and Hypothyroidism, alongside several injuries and surgeries I’ve endured throughout my adventure filled life have been formidable. Regardless, I always trained vigilantly and intensely with the utmost seriousness. So much so, that it lead me to train throughout several years in France and Tahiti.
So my fighting style evolved to survive in the environment I lived. I wasn’t a soldier on the battlefield (rejected by the military due to only having one kidney). I didn’t give a damn about any titles in the ring. And I sure as shit don’t respect let alone fear someone because they had a higher ranking belt.
Too many practitioners hide behind their rank and style, yet they’re too dumb or too blind to understand, the ability throw a punch or perform a takedown does NOT make one a great fighter. The ability to fight comes from within, it’s a state of mind, not a technique or memorized form or belt title awarded.

hroughout my career, I discovered I excelled as a Trainer, of this I can say with the highest level of confidence, sincerity, and proof. My career spanned 30 years, until I retired in November, 2023 and closed my last studio “Kaizen”. I’ve had the pleasure of training many serious fighters and individuals who embraced what I offered as a coach, and I helped them achieve a fighting skill they never thought themselves possible.
Regretfully, after a lifetime of teaching, I found myself no longer loving what I was doing for a living. As an old school Gen-Xer with the mindset of busting my ass regardless of the struggle, pain, fear, hardships, or challenges who committed myself with hyper-focus and relentless determination to better understand the physiology and psychology of combat… I could no longer tolerate the overwhelming laziness, self-entitlement, and lack of commitment from the ever increasing majority of students and in many cases, even their parents.
In the end, I felt more like a glorified babysitter, beggar, and entertainer, than I did a trainer. I refused to continue pouring my knowledge and passion into minds like a colander. We get one lifetime, and one encounter… and so I felt it was time for a change in my life.
However, among the ever increasing numbers of whiners and criers, I did have students both young and older who busted their asses in class, took their training seriously, and who absorbed the information and skill I strived to pass onto them. In some cases, my own students surpassed me, which should be the goal of any trainer passionate about their craft. Those individuals endured every physical and emotional challenge I threw at them. They never complained or argued. They fought through the tears and pain. They faced their fears and fought off their demons. They thrived and earned every victory they experienced in their growth as individuals and fighters. For those students, I miss training them sincerely.

lifetime of chasing adrenaline, and injuries leading to surgeries have taken their toll on my body. I’m not moving as fast as I used to, and some of the things I did without question or concern in my youth have turned into thoughts of “maybe not”. Getting old is a bitch, though I still stay active with my own personal training for functional fitness.
My days of fighting are behind me now and I for 3 decades, embraced my role as a trainer. I may occasionally spar with a few guys I train, but if I can avoid getting hit, kicked, or thrown on the ground, I won’t complain.
My thyroid is kicking my ass, along with old injuries and surgeries making my lifelong goal for functional fitness a continued struggle. But anything we want in life is worth fighting for. I’ve never had anything handed to me, so I continue to fight as I always have for what I want.
Despite my physical hardships, what I’m left with, is a mindset still sharp as ever and the determination to continue sharing what I learned and know of reality based combat. It’s undetermined if I’ll ever fully teach again. The hunger and passion is there, but my patience and tolerance of people is at an all time low. There’s no motivation for me to waste whatever time I have left on this beautiful pale blue dot, on people that don’t add value to my life, or see the value on what I have to offer.
If someone loves their belt and the style they’re a slave to, then I have no need for them in my life. They can’t be taught as they’re blinded by their own ego or lost in the beauty of their ignorance. I choose to share my time with those who see past the code of the martial matrix, and realize there’s more far more out there when you seek freedom of style, and begin to recognize their own martial style.

y life has always been my own, seeking peace and calm and escaping the matrix to homestead and enjoy nature and the wild as often as I can.
It may come to pass someday, where I simply disappear into a Nomadic lifestyle enjoying and experiencing the many cultures and geographies of this world. I’ve been to over a dozen countries and will continue to travel as far as my legs will carry me.
I much prefer the quite of nature, the warmth of a campfire, the calmness of being alone, and the sound of a river or waterfall. This world has become too damn noisy, and alongside all this anti-social media bullshit, the self-entitlement, laziness, and the “I’m offended” cancel culture, I just want some peace and quite.
In my retirement from teaching (what felt more like babysitting towards the end), I’ve found myself co-owning a business I would have never imagined. My girlfriend and I own “Natural Carnivore”, which is a Raw and All Natural Pet Food & Supply store. We additionally ethically raise Maine Coons at our home.
When I’m not working with domestic animals, I’m volunteering at Wisconsin Big Cat Rescue where I’ve been working with Tigers, Lions, and Leopards since 2006.
I’m a hard person to find as other than the “Lifestyle”, we’re out Kayaking, Camping, Gardening, Wood Working, Foraging, Riding Motorcycling or ATVing, or my all time favorite escape, Skiing in the Mountains!
My Legacy
CITADEL: Tactical CQC
Blue Pill or Red Pill? You Decide.
Break Free from the Martial Arts Matrix
In “The Matrix,” Neo’s journey parallels my own training and life experiences. When I met my trainers in France and Tahiti, they became my “Morpheus,” exposing me to the raw truth of martial arts. It was like taking the red pill. There was no going back. I saw martial arts for what it really is: a lie. A deception crafted to inflate egos and trap us in cages of false superiority.
Adapt, Evolve, and Overcome
Since then, my fighting style has adapted and evolved, as have my teaching methods. While my stance often pisses off those clinging to their martial arts matrix, others have found the freedom they sought. They’ve experienced training liberated from the confines of style. As my trainers did for me, I help my students discover and create their own style.
Forget What You Know and Believe
I often use the phrase “Cognitive Dissonance.” It describes the internal conflict, strife, and discord within oneself. When something learned negates, contradicts, or disproves everything we believed, it creates an emotional struggle. Pride or brainwashing, like religious indoctrination, builds a mental barrier. This barrier ignores, resists, and rebukes new information.
Shattering Illusions
This conflict occurs when people realize their style isn’t the unstoppable, flawless method their sensei claimed it to be. When they’re told being a black belt holds no value, nor makes them a certified badass, they resort to threats of violence. They try to prove they’re as tough as they want the world to believe.
The Joke of Style Superiority
The concept of “Style Superiority” is asinine. The arrogance that one’s martial style or belt color has any relevance to their fighting skill is a joke. No one cares who trained who or what affiliations they have. True skill lies in the warrior, not the accolades.
Fuck Your Ego, Fuck Your Pride
The arrogance of style superiority is laughable. It’s not about your belt or your sensei’s credentials. True strength comes from within, from your willingness to adapt and embrace the truth.
The Deception of Supremacy
Every style relies on the illusion of supremacy in its environment. Take the shark out of the ocean and put it in freshwater. It weakens and dies. Remove the fangs and venom of a cobra, and it’s just a garden snake. Take fighters out of their environment, strip away the rules, and watch them crumble. Many will realize the meaningless value of their belt, the limitations of their style, and their lack of real courage.
Adapt, Improvise, Overcome
True warriors adapt and thrive, regardless of the situation. Victory lies not in the style, but in the heart of the warrior who dares to adapt, evolve, and embrace the truth.
Traditional Vs. Non-Traditional
Shatter the Illusions
MMA and UFC have shown us the truth. Most black belts don’t know shit about real fighting. They don’t have the guts to step into the ring and prove it. It’s easier to spout, “I’ll kick your ass because I’m a black belt, and my sensei was a Navy SEAL with three world titles.” NO ONE CARES!!! NONE OF THAT MEANS ANYTHING!
Expose the Weaknesses
Every fighting style has its strengths and weaknesses. Boxing, Muay Thai, Jiu-Jitsu, traditional martial arts—they all shine in certain environments. But none are flawless. None are perfectly effective in every scenario. They’re all built on the illusion of supremacy in their ideal conditions.
The Deception of Supremacy
Take a shark out of the ocean and throw it in freshwater. It goes from apex predator to weakened and dying. Remove the fangs and venom of a cobra, and it’s just a garden snake. Take a fighter out of their controlled environment, strip away the rules, and watch them crumble. Many will experience the meaningless value of their belt color and the limitations of their style.
Reality Check
So many martial artists claim to be brave and badass fighters, yet you never see them in the ring. And just because someone has the courage and toughness to fight in the ring, it doesn’t make them a good fighter. Bravery and aggression are not enough. True warriors adapt and thrive in any situation. They embrace the reality of combat.
Adapt or Die
Victory lies not in the style, but in the heart of the warrior who dares to adapt, evolve, and embrace the truth. Let’s make fighters out of men, stripped of ego, ready for the real battles ahead. No more bullshit. Just raw, unapologetic truth.
